Good win. The Phils (11-14) defeated the Washington Nationals (11-15) Tuesday night in D.C. The Phils win their second straight and overcome the Nats in the NL East standings.
I was VERY happy with Jake Arrieta’s performance tonight. After a rough outing his last time out, he went five innings just giving up a solo shot to Trea Turner in the first. He was going to go further into the game, but a rain delay stalled the game after the fifth inning which caused his night to come to an abrupt end.
The offense, well, what can I say. It continued to be elite tonight in the Phillies 8-3 win. Down by a run early, the Phils got four runs in the third, three of which were driven in by J.T. Realmuto’s ninth home run of the season, which, was an odd one. Realmuto skied one to deep right, and it hit the top of the wall and bounced over for a three-run homer. I’ll take it. Aside from that, the Phils had some other clutch hits, and some clutch baserunning. Andrew McCutchen stole two bases, and Roman Quinn SOMEHOW scored on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. It was a one-hopper to short from McCutchen, and Roman Quinn, covering 29.6 feet per second was able to score. Quinn is the fastest player in the MLB according to Statcast. Jean Segura also drove in a few insurance runs on a two-out single in the ninth.
Trea Turner skies a solo homer, 1-0 Washington
Scott Kingery scores on an Andrew McCutchen single, 1-1 tie.
J.T. Realmuto homers to right, Andrew McCutchen scores, Rhys Hoskins scores, 4-1 Phils.
Adam Eaton homers, 4-2 Phillies.
Andrew McCutchen reaches on a fielder’s choice, Roman Quinn scores, 5-2 Philadelphia.
Alec Bohm singles in Didi Gregorius, 6-2 Phillies.
Jean Segura singles, Andrew McCutchen scores, Bryce Harper scores, 8-2 Phils.
Eric Thames reaches on an error, Asdrubal Cabrera scores, 8-3 Philadelphia.
FINAL: Phillies 8, Nationals 3
A Look Ahead:
The Phils will face off against the Nats for game two of the series tomorrow night at 6:05. Phils ace Aaron Nola will try to bounce back after a rough game against the Braves on Friday. He’ll face LHP Patrick Corbin.
