Don’t look into Fangraphs or PECOTA Phillies projections too seriously

So when you look at those projections for 2020 and see our Phillies looking at a season expected to be filled with regression and disappointment. Keep in mind a few key factors that the numbers leading up to a season tend to forget. Every team, every year, has players who over or underperform. A veteran pitcher might have one magical start left in him when his team needs it most. One rule five draft pick who almost quit the sport may turn out to hit a majestic grand slam off a guy named CC. What do the numbers miss? What can’t they quantify and calculate before the season begins? The human element.
